Using XMing with the IFR 2975

Why use XMing

Purpose of XMing

·        The 2975 uses a standard X Windows graphics display environment for all of its screens. Because of the nature of the X Windows system, the 2975 can remote its display to another computer which is running an X Windows server. XMing provides a standard X Windows server for a PC running a Microsoft (tm) operating system.

·        Unlike Cygwin/X, which provides an alternate solution, XMing does not depend on the UNIX emulation environment which Cygwin provides.

Advantages of XMing

·        XMing is available for free

·        XMing uses open software common to Linux and Cygwin

·        XMing is easy to install, and has a small memory footprint

·        XMing is self contained. It installs into a single directory, and does not depend on the Windows registry to function. It works quite well from a USB flash drive.

Disadvantages of XMing

·        XMing only provides an X Windows server. It does not provide support for client libraries.

·        XMing does not provide the additional UNIX tools that Cygwin does

Xming License Information

·        Although XMing is available for free, please see the link below for XFree86 License and X/MIT License information and permissions.

XMing Useful Documentation

Source of information about XMing

·        XMing's main site

·        The documentation on Cygwin/X about how to configure the command line parameters for XWin.exe can be used to set up XMing.exe command line parameters on the shortcut. This is discussed here

Installing XMing

OPTION 1:  Installing using Xming Archive.zip

This option is probably the easiest since we have packaged the 2975 fonts for use with Xming.   This allows you to simply extract the archive, setup a shortcut and start using Xming immediately, with no additional setup or configuration.  To do this, download the XMING Software Download here Xming_Archive.zip (23 mb)

·        XMING Shortcut configuration

A.               First, extract the files in this archive to a directory of your choice.

B.           Configure a shortcut for Xming.

·        Locate the Xming directory and right click on Xming.exe.

·        Select Create Shortcut.

·        Right click on the shortcut and select Properties and make the following changes.

·        Substitute "C:\Xming" with the correct drive and path if different from this example.

Note: The drive letter and entire path must be specified for each font directory as shown in this example.

Target:

C:\Xming\Xming.exe :0 -ac -multiwindow -fp "C:\Xming\fonts\75dpi,C:\Xming\fonts\misc,C:\Xming\fonts\TTF,C:\Xming\fonts\Type1,C:\Xming\fonts\urw" -clipboard

Note: The syntax must be exact -- please copy and paste the line above.

Start in:

"C:\Xming"

Run:

Normal Window

OPTION 2:  Installation from the Internet

·        Download the XMing software installer from the main site

·        Run the "...setup.exe" file which was downloaded.

·        Installing the fonts from the 2975

·        Create a subdirectory within the directory that XMing was installed into, with the name of: \fonts\urw

·        The fonts will be need to be downloaded from the 2975 and installed into this directory.  This process is described on the next page.

·        Create a shortcut to run the program

·        For the following discussion, the string "XMING_DIR" should be replaced with the full file path (including the drive letter and colon [c:] of where you told the XMing setup program to put the files.

·        Set the command line target to: XMING_DIR\Xming.exe -ac -multiwindow -fp "XMING_DIR\fonts\75dpi,XMING_DIR\fonts\misc,XMING_DIR\fonts\TTF,XMING_DIR\fonts\Type1,XMING_DIR\fonts\urw" -clipboard

·        Copy the shortcut to the desktop

Using a PC with the 2975

Determine the IP address of the 2975

·        Access the configuration screen of the 2975. This can be obtained by selecting "System" screen on the main window, and the "Configuration" page on the submenu.

·        An alternative way to get to the configuration screen is to press the keys: (<MODE><7><1>)

·        The IP address of the 2975 is displayed in the ADDRESS field, and is a set of 4 numbers, similiar to 10.200.xxx.xxx.

Accessing the 2975 from a standard WEB browser

·        Activate a standard WEB browser, like Firefox, Mozilla, Netscape, or Internet Explorer

·        Determine the IP address of the 2975.

·        Type the unit's IP address in the URL/Address field at the top of the browser window.

·        A WEB page should be displayed which provides information about the unit.

·        Further information is provided in the manual

Downloading fonts from the 2975

·        Access the 2975 from a standard WEB browser

·        A WEB page should be displayed which provides information about the unit. Click on the "Other Files" link on the page

·        Click on the link to the "URW fonts used by the IFR 2975"

·        Download each of the files into a directory. If using Internet Explorer, RIGHT click on a file name and select "Save Target As". Change the "Save as Type" field from "Text Document" to "All Files", to avoid having Microsoft automatically changing the file name and modifying the file.

·        Save each of these file into the XMING\fonts\URW directory that was previously created.

Using XMing to remote the 2975 display

·        Click on the XMing shortcut on your desktop

·        Access the 2975 from a standard WEB browser

·        A WEB page should be displayed which provides information about the unit. Click on the "Remote Display" link on the page

·        You will need to wait about 30 seconds to allow the screens to be built for the PC.
