Aeroflex – Wichita began life in 1968 as IFR, specializing in aircraft instruments and test equipment. In 1971, the company refocused and concentrated on avionics test equipment. In just a few years, IFR established itself as the premier brand in avionics testing. A significant portion of IFR’s avionics product line centered on RF testing. Looking for new growth opportunities, IFR applied its RF testing expertise to the nascent wireless communications market. The year was 1975, cellular was reserved for the most wealthy and public safety communications was a far cry from the sophisticated trunked systems of today. IFR viewed the market as having tremendous growth potential, a radio communications test set was developed—the FM/AM-1000. More instruments quickly followed, including the FM/AM-1500, and the venerable 1200 S and Super S models. A testament to their quality and performance, hundreds of these old workhorses continue to be in service today. In February, 1998 , IFR acquired Marconi Instruments, a wholly-owned subsidiary of General Electric Company plc (GEC), Stevenage, England, to create a new, dynamic, test and measurement company. Marconi Instruments, founded in 1936, developed an extensive range of test and measuring equipment, especially for testing radio transmitters and receivers, microwave equipment and telecommunications systems. Marconi Instruments brought to IFR an enviable reputation for its signal generators, offering a broad portfolio of RF and microwave instruments to suit every application from R&D through production test to routine service and maintenance. In the 1980s, Marconi Instruments introduced the integrated radio test set for cellular radio testing, — the 2955 — which quickly established itself as the industry standard for service maintenance and field applications. Building on this success, the company extended its product portfolio to cover all major cellular and trunked radio standards. Purchased in 2002 by Aeroflex, today, Aeroflex Wichita continues to focus on wireless, particularly on the public safety communications testing market. Over 1,000 employees and wide-ranging support facilities ensure customers always have reliable, high-integrity solutions for their most critical testing requirements. Along with the all new 2975 Project 25 test solution, Aeroflex test solutions have grown to include all the world’s major analog and digital radio PMR/SMR standards, including:
