IFR 2975 Software Update Installation - Network Connected 2975

Name: 2975 Radio Test Set Upgrade - Version 1.9.2.1
Last updated: October 19, 2006 to version 1.9.2.1 | Read the Release Notes

Description: Feature/Function additions, operational changes, loading instructions, Operation Manual changes, and support contact relating to release of software for the 2975 P25 Radio Test Set.

Important Notice:  Version 1.9.2.1 may have compatibility issues with older 2975s using a 5GB hard drive.  You must determine the size of your 2975s drive BEFORE upgrading to 1.9.2.1. firmware. Read the procedure.

We recommend that you back up your setup files BEFORE upgrading your 2975 to a newer version of software.  If your unit has a 5GB hard drive, please contact our service department at 1-800-835-2350 for more information on upgrading your 2975 to 1.9.2.1 software.

General

The 2975 is expandable to support new features required by today's rapidly changing world of wireless communications.

The 2975 is upgraded with new versions of system software on a regular basis.

The latest version of 2975 software is Version 1.9.2.1

This document describes how to upgrade the 2975 software directly using a network connection.

The fastest method of updating the version of the 2975 is to allow the 2975 to download its own software directly from the Aeroflex server. However, to support our customers who cannot directly connect their 2975 to a network or are having problems with the direct update, Aeroflex provides a second method to reload the instrument using floppy disks.

Refer to software download for details about downloading the floppy builder update.

Previous Version Compatibility
If you are attempting to update an 2975 with Version 1.1.0 or earlier, STOP.
This release of software is compatible with Version 1.3.0 and higher calibration (upgrade does not require 2975 re-calibration).

This release may NOT be compatible with SETUP functions from prior versions of software due to additional functions and capabilities. SETUP functions will require re-setup and re-save after Version 1.9.2.1 is installed.

It is recommended that you document each setup currently in the 2975, then delete each setup prior to installing Version 1.9.2.1.

2975 units with Version 1.1.0 or earlier require contacting Aeroflex for a memory upgrade. This memory upgrade will require the 2975 to be returned to an authorized Aeroflex Service Center.
Refer to the Aeroflex Contact Info.
The software upgrade is available for Versions 1.3.0 and higher through one of the following methods:

  • Downloading directly into your 2975 using your network, or
  • Downloading onto your PC from the Aeroflex web site and then reloading the 2975 using floppy disks.

Direct Download to 2975:

The Direct Download requires the following setup considerations:

  • The 2975 be connected to an Ethernet based network, and,
  • The following pieces of information from your network administrator:
    • The TCP/IP GATEWAY address for your network.
    • The TCP/IP NETMASK of your network. Your system administrator may ask if you can set the 2975 to DHCP. Unfortunately, that is not possible at this time.
    • A fixed IP address to be assigned to your 2975.
    • Whether your network requires the use of a proxy to access an external HTTP server, and if so, the proxy address.
  • The 2975 must be able to access the Aeroflex web servers via HTTP.

Direct Download Procedure:

  1. To connect your 2975 to your local network, plug a UTP Ethernet cable (either 10base-T or 100base-T) into the 2975's Ethernet connection (on the rear panel of the instrument).
  2. Press MODE, 7, 1 to select the CONFIGURATION screen.
    • Enter the TCP/IP address to be assigned to your unit in the IP ADDRESS field.
    • Enter your TCP/IP netmask into the NETMASK field.
    • Enter your TCP/IP gateway address into the GATEWAY field.
  3. Do not modify the DISPLAY HOST field - this is used when you are displaying the 2975's screen on a remote X Windowing system server. Setting this field incorrectly could prevent your 2975 from operating correctly!
  4. You may change the HOST NAME field if you wish - this is for future applications, and does not currently affect the operation of the 2975.
  5. Go to the software RELOAD screen by pressing MODE, 7, 4. Press the "Download System" soft key.
  6. You will be asked if you use a proxy server. If your systems administrator has told you to NOT use a proxy, then skip steps 7, 8 and 9.
  7. If you use a proxy server, change the NO to a YES by pressing ENTER (or clicking on the button with the mouse).
  8. You will be asked for the proxy server's IP address and port. Enter the proxy server's IP address in the first field and then use the right arrow to move over to the Proxy Port field. Input the proxy port number there. If your systems administrator did not tell you a port number, try 80.
  9. You will be asked if your proxy server requires a user name and password. Fill in the values your system administrator gave you. (NOTE: if you DO need to give a user name and password, you will need to connect an IBM PC-AT keyboard to the 2975 to enter any letters or punctuation marks not found on the 2975's keypad.)
  10. Now, press the "Go To IFR" soft key. The 2975 will attempt to access the Aeroflex web server and show you the software reload page.
  11. If this fails to show the Aeroflex web page, then one of the following conditions exist:
    • Aeroflex's web servers are down. Try again later.
    • The 2975 is not compatible with your firewall. You will need to download the floppy builder.
    • The Ethernet connection is not working. Make sure the LEDs on the 2975's Ethernet port are lit.
  12. When the page loads, verify the URL at the top of the screen is http://ftp.ifrsys.com/fits/new.
  13. Follow the directions on the screen of the 2975 to complete the Direct Download process.

Enter the 2975 Serial Number

After updating the 2975 to the latest version, you may need to enter the 2975's serial number into the new software.  This is required if the prior version of software is prior to Version 1.5.0.

This is critical if you wish to purchase and install any option - if you don't enter the serial number correctly, Aeroflex will not be able to create the license file for your unit.

Write down the unit's serial number - it's printed on a label on the back of your 2975. The serial number is a 9-digit number.

  1. Download and install the latest version update (described previously). After the unit has rebooted, go to the VERSION screen by pressing MODE, 7, 3. If the serial number has not been entered, a window will open within the VERSION screen, asking you to enter the serial number. IF THE SERIAL NUMBER IS ALREADY PRESENT, THIS WINDOW WILL NOT APPEAR, INDICATING THE SERIAL NUMBER IS ALREADY PRESENT. NO FURTHER ACTION IS REQUIRED.
  2. Enter the 9-digit serial number from the rear panel label into this window. You will have to enter it twice to help prevent errors.
  3. When you have correctly entered your serial number twice, select the ACCEPT button and press ENTER to set your serial number. At this point, the serial number window will close.
  4. To view the serial number just entered, exit the VERSION screen (press MODE, 7, 1) then re-enter the VERSION screen (MODE, 7, 3). Press the "Installed Options" soft key and verify the serial number is displayed in the area at the top of this screen.
  5. Finally, press MODE, 7, 1 to select the CONFIGURATION screen, then press the FACTORY DEFAULT softkey. The 2975 is now ready for use.

Option Installation

After entering or verifying a valid 2975 serial number, one or more of the available 2975 Software Options may be installed.

Refer to the Try Before Buy Page for details about options for the 2975.
